CREATING A RECORD OF NEST SUCCESS

The Science

Your own backyard contains a wealth of potential scientific data.  The ability of animals to provide food for their young is a powerful measure of habitat quality. Hawk-Owl Nest Monitors detect and record all food-carrying activity in birdhouses or natural nest cavities.

Hawk-Owl Nest Monitors record more than just feeding rates. The timing of all activity into and out of the nest is measured with one-second accuracy and plotted against daylight and temperature.  Data from the activity sensor can include nest selection, nest building, feeding, fledging, roosting, predation and nest parasitism.  Hawk-Owl Nest Monitors do not distinguish between these behaviors for you, but as you grow familiar with your species it is truly exciting to discover how to recognize patterns and exceptions in the data.

You don’t need to be an engineer to deploy a Hawk-Owl Nest Monitor.  If you can install four AA batteries and hang it in a tree then you will be collecting valid data – it's that easy to use!
